Civil Engineering – A New Perspective of Better Building

Engineering is one such branch of science that has the potential to turn infinite possibilities into reality. Engineering has changed the way man lives. There are various inventions here which have simplified the life of human beings. Fire, wheel, motor vehicle, fuel, mobile phones, internet, transport facilities, roads, bridges, tunnels, trains, airplanes, computers, cameras are many examples of engineering innovations that have changed the world. Engineering has played an important role in human development.

Branches of Engineering

The economy of the country depends on its infrastructure and various branches of engineering are needed to upgrade the infrastructure.
  • Civil Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Computer Science Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Aeronautical Engineering
  • Engineering Management
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Mining Engineering
  • Transportation Engineering
  • Agriculture Engineering
  • Marine Engineering
  • Petroleum Engineering
  • Drafting & Design
  • Architectural Engineering & many more
A country can develop only when the infrastructure is modern in the country and a civil engineer plays its important role in enhancing infrastructure of a country. Civil engineering is the oldest branch of engineering. Civil engineer makes roads, houses, bridges, tunnels, canals, dams, reservoirs, ports, airports, railway tracks etc. Today, without civil engineering, the country cannot upgrade infrastructure nor can it boost economy. The social responsibility of a civil engineer is to provide environmental protection. There are so many fields in civil engineering based on the nature of works, few are discussed below.

Environmental engineer

Environmental engineer helps in finding and developing solutions to environmental problems so that society can be saved from the damage caused by disaster and raise the standard of social life. The Environmental Engineer assists the Government in various environmental projects. An environmental engineer may assist with a project aimed at improving a recycling process in a nearby municipality, or may work with an organization to monitor levels of air pollution and take necessary action.

Site engineer

Site engineer helps in completing all types of construction projects. The site engineer serves as a technical consultant on construction sites. Role and responsibility of the site engineer depends on the nature of the construction site. The site engineer ensures that the required resources are available at the construction site in appropriate quantities. The site engineer ensures that the work on site is completed on time. It is also the responsibility of the site engineer to know the requirement of laborers, materials, machineries, lab equipment, drawings and design. The site engineer also creates a detailed project report which contains all the details of the project.

Surveyor

Surveyor is the person on the construction site who performs accurate measurements on the construction site. Before starting any construction project, we must have complete knowledge of that site such as location, area, levels of the construction site etc. The surveyor has to measure the distance and angle between two different points on the Earth surface. Maps, drawings, sketches are drafted by the data the surveyor collects. Surveyor is the important part of the civil engineering field.

Soil Engineer

Soil Engineer gives complete information of site’s soils before starting construction. Soils are used as construction materials or the civil engineering structures are founded in or on the surface of the earth. Soil properties influence the civil engineering structure, so it is important to know the properties of the soil such as specific gravity, particle size, soil bearing capacity and many more before construction. Soil engineer ensure the safety of civil engineering structure. Apart from these there are many fields in civil engineering.
  • Water Resource Engineering
  • Irrigation Engineering
  • Transportation Engineering
  • Structural Engineering
  • Drafting & Design Engineering
So, basically civil engineers manage, design, develop, and maintain all type of construction work, conduct on site investigation and analyze data such as maps, testing reports, designs, and materials, provide technical suggestions, monitor project progress and compile reports in project status. Civil engineering is a good career option to connect with the country’s economic growth and infrastructure development.
