About Digital Computing
We’re currently in the fourth generation of computers with the microprocessors after vacuum tubes, transistors and integrated circuits. They were all based on digital computing which is based on the classical phenomenon of electrical circuits being in a single state at a given time, either on or off. Today’s computers use bits, a stream of electrical or optical pulses representing 1s or 0s. Everything from your tweets and e-mails to your iTunes songs and YouTube videos are essentially long strings of these binary digits. We’ve been using computers since early 19th century. A general meaning of the computing is the procedure of calculating or determining something by mathematical or logical methods i.e. The process or act of calculation. Early 17th century, The Latin word computare itself comes from: Latin com, meaning “with”, and Latin putare, meaning “to settle”. Digital word has come out from digit, any of the numerals from 0 to 9 is the digit. A general meaning of the digital is expression of signals or data as series of the digits 0 and 1, typically represented by values of a physical quantity such as voltage or magnetic polarization.Figure 1: Bit superposition
Digital computing is an activity that is used by digital system or devices to manage, process, and communicate information the data in two discrete value 0 and 1.Each of these discrete values is referred to as a bit and a string of bits that a computer can address individually as a group is a byte. Digital systems manipulate information in discrete chunks. Digital technology is primarily used with new physical communications media, such as satellite and fiber optic transmission. A modem is used to convert the digital information in your computer to analog signals for your phone line and to convert analog phone signals to digital information for your computer.Figure 2: Digital Computing

Although digital devices can use any numeric system to manipulate data, they currently only use the binary number system which is consisting of ones and zeros. Information of all types are encoded in the binary number system before being processed by digital devices.
