Position of Women in Society

Treatment given to women in different countries is different and the nature and the character of the people are often judged by such treatment Customs, traditions in which women are treated. Indian society seen various types of attitudes taken through the centuries. Vedic scriptures refer to cases of women being given an honored place both in the family and society. Our Holy scriptures contain cases of women who were respected for their knowledge. But with the dawn of history and the domination of our people by foreign elements, things underwent a change women were confined to the kitchen and to the interior of the house and taking art in public life was not to be thought of. They were almost slaves to men and to undesirable customs. Things, however, have changed in modern days. Even in foreign countries the freedom now enjoyed by women was the result of much agitation. But in our country such a freedom as is experienced by Indian women is the result of a social change rather than that of a revolutionary attitude. The spread of education and an economic need caused Indian women to come out of the Kitchen and take a place equal with men. Women’s education, participation of women in public affairs, employment in private and public sectors, and, in general, an involvement in normal affairs of life are not prohibited areas for women today. No other proof for this is needed than that we have a woman Prime Minister. Opinions are divided among people about the effects of such freedom given to women. Many even among the educated and sophisticated feel that the morality is on the downgrade with the enjoyment of freedom and liberty. This may be true in some cases. But the basic nature and character of Indian womanhood has not changed and cannot change. A majority of our educated women, young or old, are still excellent examples of Indian womanhood at its best. While being friendly with men, they would not tolerate any liberties to be taken with their womanhood. Many still cherish the respect for their elders. Exceptions there may be, but Indian womanhood will never die. No amount of foreign influence can extinguish the fire of chastity and modesty that is characteristic of women in our country.
