I heard someone call out ‘COLOR ME BEAUTIFUL’ This reminded me of one sentence that I always share with my fashion students that See the Flora & Fauna, how beautiful are the colors of flowers, leaves, butterflies and just one pair of dress (Skin) of animals, and birds they all look so perfect with the color, texture and some designs WOW! God is the greatest Artist.

When he made human beings he thought let me give them brains to think and dress themselves to add vanity in the society. So we have first clothing i.e. our skin and what we decide to wear is our second layer i.e. our clothing.

WHAT you WEAR is called CLOTHING, and HOW you WEAR THEM is called FASHION. But today I am just going to concentrate on Colors you choose in your clothing.

One would say it is personal TASTE or CHOICE, but I would go a step further and add that one should select colors in clothing as per their skin tone as it would enhance one’s personality.

Let’s try to understand our skin color & tone before plunging into suggested recommendations.  Each one has a unique skin-tone. In the slow-motion evolutionary process the earliest human beings – proto-men, originated in Africa and had black skin.

After millions of years of further evolution proto-men became true-men or modern Homo sapiens. They had become animal hunters and some started migrating towards Asia, Europe and later America in pursuit of animals. In these distant lands climate was different from Africa. Different climates started bringing about changes in color of skin of these people.

This phenomenon started about 35,000 years ago and is still going on. Although they were descendants of the same ancestors, their appearance has changed so much that similarities were no longer visible. The accompanying map shows distribution of human beings according to color of skin, and these colors of skin are naturally fully suited to climatic conditions of these areas.

Finding colors that best compliment these tones brings out special beauty in a person. A person can come to life with radiance and new-found self-confidence as they discover their colors. The world’s most beautiful women and men – have discovered color’s power to make the world regard them in awe.

Color fills our world with beauty. We also use colors in various ways to add pleasure and interest to our lives. Color plays an important part in nature. Color has the ability to make us aware of what we see; for nothing has meaning without color.

Color is- one of the great joys of life, hence its exploration and uses are never ending to such an extent that it affects every aspect of our daily lives. In the field of color, we all have a chance to express ourselves individually because the purchase of every object nearly always involves making a decision about color.

From the choice of clothing, house wares, and furniture to the selection of new car or the landscaping of a garden or painting the walls in the house, color and its appeal needs to be considered first before anything else.

Personal color choices and how people react to color confirms a lifelong engagement of color with emotions, which defines our world as a time tested phenomena.

Our eyes are attracted to color to such an extent that the color of an object is perceived before the details imparted by its shapes and lines.

Every color has four dimensions – Hue, Value, Intensity and Temperature. Hue is simply the kind or name of a color such as red, blue or green. The difference between blue and green is the difference between the hues.

Hues have a decided effect upon one’s feelings and it is important to know how people react to color schemes. A hue without any white, black, gray or complementary in it is termed as pure hue.

Value refers to the lightness or darkness of a hue. The values of a specific hue can be changed only by adding black or white; the resulting value when black is added to a color is shade – it has low value and when white is added to a color is tint – it has high value, tones are obtained by adding gray.

Intensity or saturation, defines the degree of purity of a hue, or more simply put how bright or how dull a hue is. All pure hues are at their full Chroma (intensity), but these pure hues differ among themselves as to Chroma strength.

Temperature refers to the warmth or coolness of a color. Research has shown that certain colors stimulate us and increase our temperature slightly, and some colors relax us and decrease our temperature. The warm hues are yellow, yellow-orange, orange, red-orange, red, and red-violet. The cool hues are yellow-green, blue-green, blue, and blue-violet. Green and violet appear to be neither warm nor cool.

Ancient history endorses our fascination for color in clothing as it reflects personality, character, taste, cultural differences and also conveys significant messages that projects society and its lifestyle.

Color as a fundamental consideration in research and design, is often the first element that is noticed about a design and influences how that garment or collection is perceived.

‘Color come before style and price, and is the first factor to which the customer responds’.

Color’s work like magic if selected in accordance to a skin-tone, especially if one dresses in colors that suit them and are appropriate for them. It is also important that appropriate color selection is done for day wear and evening wear. Color is the essence of dressing successfully; it affects how you feel and how people respond to you.
